ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪܟܢ ܘܫܐܠ ܕܘܝܕ ܒܡܪܝܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܣܩ ܠܚܕܐ ܡܢ ܩܘܪ̈ܝܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܡܪܝܐ ܣܩ ܘܐܡܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܠܐܝܟܐ ܐܣܩ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܠܚܒܪܘܢ

After this, David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” Yahweh said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” He said, “To Hebron.”

ܘܣܠܩ ܠܬܡܢ ܕܘܝܕ ܘܐܦ ܬܪ̈ܬܝܢ ܢܫ̈ܘܗܝ ܐܚܝܢܥܡ ܕܡܢ ܐܝܙܪܥܝܠ ܘܐܒܝܓܠ ܐܢܬܬܗ ܕܢܒܠ ܟܪܡܠܝܐ

So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.

ܘܕܘܝܕ ܘܓܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܥܡܗ ܣܠܩܘ ܘܐܢܫ̈ܝ ܒܝܬܗ ܘܝܬܒܘ ܒܚܒܪܘܢ
bkhbrwn wythbw bythh w'nshy slqw emh wgbrwhy wdwyd
David brought up his men who were with him, every man with his household. They lived in the cities of Hebron.

ܘܐܬܘ ܐܢܫܐ ܕܝܗܘܕܐ ܠܡܡܫܚ ܬܡܢ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܕܢܡܠܟ ܥܠ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܘܚܘܝܘ ܠܕܘܝܕ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܕܐܢܫ̈ܝ ܝܒܝܫ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܩܒܪܘ ܠܫܐܘܠ

The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David, “The men of Jabesh Gilead were those who buried Saul.”

ܘܫܕܪ ܕܘܝܕ ܐܝ̈ܙܓܕܐ ܠܘܬ ܐܢܫ̈ܝ ܝܒܝܫ ܕܓܠܥܕ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܒܪ̈ܝܟܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܡܪܝܐ ܕܥܒܕܬܘܢ ܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܥܡ ܡܪܟܘܢ ܥܡ ܫܐܘܠ ܕܩܒܪܬܘܢܝܗܝ

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh Gilead, and said to them, “Blessed are you by Yahweh, that you have shown this kindness to your lord, even to Saul, and have buried him.

ܘܗܫܐ ܢܥܒܕ ܡܪܝܐ ܥܡܟܘܢ ܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܘܩܘܫܬܐ ܘܐܦ ܐܢܐ ܐܥܒܕ ܥܡܟܘܢ ܛܝܒܘܬܐ ܗܕܐ ܕܥܒܕܬܘܢ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܗܢܐ
hn' pthgm' debdthwn hd' Tybwth' emkwn 'ebd 'n' w'p wqwshth' Tybwth' emkwn mry' nebd whsh'
Now may Yahweh show loving kindness and truth to you. I also will reward you for this kindness, because you have done this thing.

ܘܗܫܐ ܢܬܚ̈ܝܠܢ ܐ̈ܝܕܝܟܘܢ ܘܗܘܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܚܝܠܐ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܝܬ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܪܟܘܢ ܘܠܝ ܡܫܚܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܕܐܡܠܟ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ
elyhwn d'mlk yhwd' bny mshkhw wly mrkwn sh'wl dmyth mTl khyl' bny whww 'ydykwn nthkhyln whsh'
Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

ܘܐܒܢܝܪ ܒܪ ܢܝܪ ܪܒ ܚܝܠܗ ܕܫܐܘܠ ܕܒܪ ܠܐܫܒܫܘܠ ܒܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܐܥܒܪܗ ܠܡܚܢܝܡ
lmkhnym w'ebrh sh'wl br l'shbshwl dbr dsh'wl khylh rb nyr br w'bnyr
Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s army, had taken Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

ܘܐܡܠܟܗ ܥܠ ܓܠܥܕ ܘܥܠ ܓܫܘܪ ܘܥܠ ܐܝܙܪܥܝܠ ܘܥܠ ܐܦܪܝܡ ܘܥܠ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܘܥܠ ܟܠܗ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ
'ysryl klh wel bnymyn wel 'prym wel 'yzreyl wel gshwr wel gled el w'mlkh
He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

ܒܪ ܐܪ̈ܒܥܝܢ ܗܘܐ ܫ̈ܢܝܢ ܐܫܒܫܘܠ ܒܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܟܕ ܐܡܠܟ ܥܠ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܬܪ̈ܬܝܢ ܫ̈ܢܝܢ ܐܡܠܟ ܒܪܡ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܗܘܘ ܒܬܪ ܕܘܝܕ
dwyd bthr hww yhwd' dbyth brm 'mlk shnyn wthrthyn 'ysryl el 'mlk kd sh'wl br 'shbshwl shnyn hw' 'rbeyn br
Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

ܘܗܘܐ ܡܢܝܢܐ ܕܝܘܡ̈ܬܐ ܕܐܡܠܟ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܘܝܕ ܒܚܒܪܘܢ ܥܠ ܕܒܝܬ ܝܗܘܕܐ ܫܒܥ ܫ̈ܢܝܢ ܘܫܬܐ ܝܪ̈ܚܝܢ
yrkhyn wshth' shnyn shbe yhwd' dbyth el bkhbrwn dwyd mlk' d'mlk dywmth' mnyn' whw'
The time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

ܘܢܦܩ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܒܪ ܢܝܪ ܘܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܐܫܒܫܘܠ ܒܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܡܢ ܡܚܢܝܡ ܠܓܒܥܘܢ

Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

ܘܝܘܐܒ ܒܪ ܨܘܪܝܐ ܘܓܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܢܦܩܘ ܘܦܓܥܘ ܒܗܘܢ ܒ̈ܥܠܝܡܐ ܒܓܒܥܘܢ ܐܟܚܕܐ ܘܝܬܒܘ ܗܠܝܢ ܥܠܝܡ̈ܐ ܡܟܐ ܘܗܠܝܢ ܥܠܝܡ̈ܐ ܡܟܐ

Joab the son of Zeruiah and David’s servants went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool.

ܘܐܡܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܠܝܘܐܒ ܢܩܘܡܘܢ ܛ̈ܠܝܐ ܢܫܬܥܘܢ ܩܕܡܝܢ ܘܐܡܪ ܝܘܐܒ ܢܩܘܡܘܢ
nqwmwn yw'b w'mr qdmyn nshthewn Tly' nqwmwn lyw'b 'bnyr w'mr
Abner said to Joab, “Please let the young men arise and compete before us!” Joab said, “Let them arise!”

ܘܩܡܘ ܘܥܒܪܘ ܒܡܢܝܢܐ ܬܪ̈ܥܣܪ ܕܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܕܐܫܒܫܘܠ ܒܪ ܫܐܘܠ ܘܬܪ̈ܥܣܪ ܡܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܕܘܝܕ
ddwyd gbr' mn wthresr sh'wl br d'shbshwl dbnymyn thresr bmnyn' webrw wqmw
Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin and for Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of David’s servants.

ܘܐܚܕܘ ܐܢܫ ܒܪܝܫ ܚܒܪܗ ܘܣܝܦܗ ܡܢ ܓܢܒ ܚܒܪܗ ܘܢܦܠܘ ܐܟܚܕܐ ܘܩܪܘ ܠܐܬܪܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܚܩܠܬ ܨܕܢ ܕܒܓܒܥܘܢ
dbgbewn tsdn khqlth hw l'thr' wqrw 'kkhd' wnplw khbrh gnb mn wsyph khbrh brysh 'nsh w'khdw
They each caught his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place in Gibeon was called Helkath Hazzurim.

ܘܗܘܐ ܩܪܒܐ ܥܫܝܢ ܛܒ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܘܐܬܬܒܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܘܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܩܕܡ ܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ ܕܕܘܝܕ
ddwyd ebdwhy qdm d'ysryl wgbr' 'bnyr w'ththbr hw bywm' Tb eshyn qrb' whw'
The battle was very severe that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before David’s servants.

ܘܗܘܘ ܬܡܢ ܬܠܬܐ ܒܢ̈ܝܗ ܕܨܘܪܝܐ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܒܝܫܝ ܘܥܫܐܝܠ ܘܥܫܐܝܠ ܩܠܝܠ ܗܘܐ ܒܪ̈ܓܠܘܗܝ ܐܝܟ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܛܒ̈ܝܐ ܕܒܡܕܒܪܐ

The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Asahel was as light of foot as a wild gazelle.

ܘܪܕܦ ܥܫܐܝܠ ܒܬܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܘܠܐ ܣܛܐ ܠܡܐܙܠ ܠܐ ܠܝܡܝܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܠܣܡܠܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ
'bnyr bthr mn lsml' wl' lymyn' l' lm'zl sT' wl' 'bnyr bthr esh'yl wrdp
Asahel pursued Abner. He didn’t turn to the right hand or to the left from following Abner.

ܘܐܬܦܢܝ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܠܒܣܬܪܗ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܢܬ ܗܘ ܗܢܐ ܥܫܐܝܠ ܘܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܗܘ

Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is that you, Asahel?” He answered, “It is.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܠܗ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܣܛܝ ܠܟ ܠܝܡܝܢܟ ܐܘ ܠܣܡܠܟ ܘܐܚܘܕ ܠܟ ܚܕ ܡܢ ܛܠܝ̈ܐ ܘܣܒ ܠܟ ܙܝܢܗ ܘܠܐ ܨܒܐ ܥܫܐܝܠ ܕܢܣܛܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪܗ
bthrh mn dnsT' esh'yl tsb' wl' zynh lk wsb Tly' mn khd lk w'khwd lsmlk 'w lymynk lk sTy 'bnyr lh w'mr
Abner said to him, “Turn away to your right hand or to your left, and grab one of the young men, and take his armor.” But Asahel would not turn away from following him.

ܘܐܘܣܦ ܬܘܒ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܠܡܐܡܪ ܠܥܫܐܝܠ ܕܢܣܛܐ ܡܢ ܒܬܪܗ ܘܐܡܪ ܣܛܝ ܠܟ ܡܢ ܒܬܪܝ ܕܠܐ ܐܡܚܝܟ ܘܐܪܡܝܟ ܥܠ ܐܪܥܐ ܘܐܝܟܢܐ ܐܪܝܡ ܐ̈ܦܝ ܘܐܚܘܪ ܒܝܘܐܒ ܐܚܘܟ

Abner said again to Asahel, “Turn away from following me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How then could I look Joab your brother in the face?”

ܘܠܐ ܨܒܐ ܠܡܣܛܐ ܘܡܚܝܗܝ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܒܕܘܢܒܐ ܕܢܝܙܟܐ ܥܠ ܚܕܝܗ ܘܢܦܩ ܡܢ ܒܣܬܪܗ ܘܢܦܠ ܬܡܢ ܘܡܝܬ ܥܠ ܕܘܟܬܗ ܘܟܘܠ ܕܐܬܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܘܬ ܕܘܟܬܐ ܗ̇ܝ ܕܢܦܠ ܬܡܢ ܥܫܐܝܠ ܩܐܡ ܗܘܐ

However, he refused to turn away. Therefore Abner with the back end of the spear struck him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there and died in the same place. As many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

ܘܩܡ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܒܝܫܝ ܘܪܕܦܘ ܒܬܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܫܡܫܐ ܥܪܒ ܘܗܢܘܢ ܡܛܝܘ ܠܓܒܥܬ ܝܡܐ ܕܩܕܡ ܓܝܚ ܒܐܘܪܚܐ ܕܡܕܒܪܐ ܕܓܒܥܘܢ

But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. The sun went down when they had come to the hill of Ammah, that lies before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon.

ܘܐܬܟܢܫܘ ܒܢ̈ܝ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܒܬܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܘܗܘܘ ܓܘܕܐ ܚܕܐ ܘܩܡܘ ܥܠ ܪܝܫ ܪܡܬܐ ܚܕܐ

The children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill.

ܘܩܪܐ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܠܝܘܐܒ ܘܐܡܪ ܠܥܠܡܝܢ ܬܩ̇ܛܠ ܚܪܒܐ ܠܐ ܝܕܥ ܐܢܬ ܕܡܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܬܗܘܐ ܒܚܪܬܐ ܥܕܡܐ ܠܐܡܬܝ ܠܐ ܬܐܡܪ ܠܥܡܐ ܠܡܗܦܟ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܐ̈ܚܝܗܘܢ

Then Abner called to Joab, and said, “Shall the sword devour forever? Don’t you know that it will be bitterness in the latter end? How long will it be then, before you ask the people to return from following their brothers?”

ܘܐܡܪ ܝܘܐܒ ܚܝ ܗܘ ܡܪܝܐ ܐܠܘ ܠܐ ܡܠܠܬ ܐܠܐ ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܠܨܦܪܐ ܡܦܪܩ ܗܘܝܬ ܠܥܡܐ ܓܒܪ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܐܚܘܗܝ
'khwhy bthr mn gbr lem' hwyth mprq ltspr' shryr'yth 'l' mllth l' 'lw mry' hw khy yw'b w'mr
Joab said, “As God lives, if you had not spoken, surely then in the morning the people would have gone away, and not each followed his brother.”

ܘܩܪܐ ܝܘܐܒ ܒܫܝܦܘܪܐ ܘܩܡܘ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܘܠܐ ܪܕܦܘ ܬܘܒ ܒܬܪ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܠܐ ܐܘܣܦܘ ܬܘܒ ܠܡܬܟܬܫܘ

So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still and pursued Israel no more, and they fought no more.

ܘܐܒܢܝܪ ܘܓܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܗܠܟܘ ܒܚܘܪܒܐ ܟܠܗ ܠܠܝܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܘܥܒܪܘ ܝܘܪܕܢܢ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܠܐ̈ܦܝ ܓܫܘܪ ܘܐܬܘ ܠܡܚܢܝܡ
lmkhnym w'thw gshwr l'py w'zlw ywrdnn webrw hw lly' klh bkhwrb' hlkw wgbrwhy w'bnyr
Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

ܘܝܘܐܒ ܗܦܟ ܡܢ ܒܬܪ ܐܒܢܝܪ ܘܟܢܫܘ ܟܠܗ ܥܡܐ ܘܐܬܡܢܝܘ ܕܐܬܡܚܝܘ ܡܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܬܪ̈ܥܣܪ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ ܘܥܫܐܝܠ ܡܝܬ

Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together, nineteen men of David’s and Asahel were missing.

ܘܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܕܘܝܕ ܩ̇ܛܠܘ ܡܢ ܒܢܝܡܝܢ ܘܡܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܐ ܕܐܒܢܝܪ ܬܠܬܡܐܐ ܘܫܬܝܢ ܓܒܪ̈ܝܢ
gbryn wshthyn thlthm'' d'bnyr gbr' wmn bnymyn mn qTlw ddwyd wgbr'
But David’s servants had struck Benjamin Abner’s men so that three hundred sixty men died.

ܘܫܩܠܘܗܝ ܠܥܫܐܝܠ ܘܩܒܪܘܗܝ ܒܩܒܪܐ ܕܐܒܘܗܝ ܒܝܬ ܠܚܡ ܘܐܙܠܘ ܟܠܗ ܠܠܝܐ ܝܘܐܒ ܘܚܒܪ̈ܘܗܝ ܘܢܗܪ ܠܗܘܢ ܒܚܒܪܘܢ
bkhbrwn lhwn wnhr wkhbrwhy yw'b lly' klh w'zlw lkhm byth d'bwhy bqbr' wqbrwhy lesh'yl wshqlwhy
They took up Asahel and buried him in the tomb of his father, which was in Bethlehem. Joab and his men went all night, and the day broke on them at Hebron.
